Gateshead College Win BCS College of the Year Award

College of the Year Award 2012 - GatesheadCollege of the Year Award sponsored by Molten was taken from the West Midlands by Gateshead College in the North East who were the 2012 winners.

The runner-up for the award was Wyke 6th Form College, in the Yorkshire & Humberside region.

Both colleges received a trophy from Bob Hope, Chairman of Molten Sports, which sponsored the prestigious award.

They were selected from colleges nominated from around the country in recognition of their significant contributions to BCS in developing opportunities for students and/or staff through sport, developing college sport regionally or nationally, and working in partnership with other BCS member colleges locally, regionally, or nationally.

The National College of the Year Award was devised to showcase their work and the presentations were made at this year’s BCS/ AoC National Sport Conference, held at the Aston Business School Conference Centre, Birmingham.

The shortlisted colleges for the award by region were:

  • East Midlands – South Nottingham College
  • London – St Francis Xavier 6th Form College
  • North East – Gateshead College
  • North West – Riverside College
  • South East – Peter Symonds College
  • South West – Bridgwater College
  • Wales – Gower College Swansea
  • West Midlands – Newcastle-under-Lyme College
  • Yorkshire & Humberside – Wyke 6th Form College.

John Hole said:
 “It has been fantastic for BCS and our sponsors Molten and O’Neills to award colleges and students for their hard work and achievements, especially as part of our annual conference which enabled us to showcase this in the format it deserves.”

Bob Hope and Peter Kennedy were assisted in their presentations by BCS Student Council member Hannah Burgess who attends Hereford 6th Form College and Rebecca Knowles who attends Hills Road 6th Form College.

Bob Hope said: “British Colleges Sport Annual Conference at Aston University in Birmingham last week was a huge success.  Not only did BCS host an excellent exhibition, enabling great networking opportunities for us, but the event cumulated culminated with a marvellous conference dinner at which Molten had the very great privilege of presenting The College of the Year Award.  Thank you to British Colleges Sport and many congratulations to winners Gateshead College, North East and runners-up Wyke 6th Form College, Hull for their outstanding efforts in developing sport in their respective colleges.”
